Closing Ceremonies in Dubai

July featured a bittersweet end for Noorali who worked with a wonderful group of musicians on arranging music and performing in the Closing Ceremonies of the Jubilee Games 2016. The group’s composition was directed by Salim Merchant of the Salim-Sulaiman duo and conducted by Canadian pianist Ameera Nimjee. Noorali’s rendering of “Ave Maria” as a part of the Musical Medley surprised an audience who did not have opera on their minds!

“Teel Bhar Tulana” in concert at Furst World in Joshua Tree

Noorali brings out a piece of her cultural heritage in this jam/performance of “Teel Bhar Tulana,” an Ismaili Ginan, with David Gonzalez, a storyteller and musician. Gonzalez is a cultural ambassador for the U.S. State Department, and is the proud recipient of the International Performing Arts for Youth “Lifetime Achievement Award for Sustained Excellence“. Noorali is grateful for this concert experience at Furst World in Joshua Tree where she played a couple more jams with with Gonzalez, Jay Henderson (sax player), and Mario “The Giant” Garcia (rapper).

Samira Performs at CONNECTED

Noorali was recently featured at CONNECTED, a program run by the Coachella Valley Arts Scene. The featured reading + open mic event that takes place every third Saturday of the month is now being held at the new CVAS location in the Westfield Mall in Palm Desert. At the February 2016 reading, Noorali performed a Love poem that contained operatic lines of Bach’s Ave Maria.

Las Volcanistas

Las Volcanistas, an impromptu band, formed in Tepoztlan, Mexico in mid-January this year and played at El Mango. The group, led by the talented Rebecca Levi, consisted of five singers. Noorali joined in as a singer and performed in multipart pieces as well as a solo. With beautiful Spanish, Hindi and English music in various styles and genres, the group serenaded the writing residents of Under the Volcano and other patrons. Songs included unique renditions of Todo Cambia, Wagon Wheel, Kesariya Balam, Tu Falta de Querer, and Amazing Grace.

The 111 Music Festival is a mobile festival that takes place on the public transit line… that would be a line of buses! They presented operatic, Hindustani classical, and even gospel numbers. Their diversity of musical training shone brightly at this event which was fun, weird and pretty awesome!
